Fellow of the Sylt Foundation
Jaocb van Schalkwyk was the winner of the ABSA L'Atelier Merit Award 2013. This prize afforded him the opportunity to spend time on the Island of Sylt, through the Sylt Foundation. Since then he is involved in many projects of the Sylt Foundation. In april 2017 he is joining the workshop and the art exhibition in Yangon/Myanmar as a part of the Sylt Foundation's exchange programme Transformation and Identity.

Jacob van Schalkwyk (b.1979) is an artist based in Cape Town, South Africa. He received his BFA in Drawing (2003) from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, where he lived for nine years before returning to Johannesburg and then Cape Town. Van Schalkwyk has been a visiting artist at CalArts, guest lecturer at the Digital Arts department of WITS, lecturer at The Open Window School of Visual Communication and most recently a guest lecturer at the Fine Arts department of the University of Stellenbosch. The Alibi Club, his debut novel published in 2014 by Umuzi, was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Literary Award, the kykNet-Rapport book prize, the UJ Fiction Prize and the SATI Prize for Outstanding Translation.

Through his documentation of the people and landscape in his immediate environment, the artist is endeavouring to ask questions about the effects of the passage of time on society, through the process of layering and juxtaposition of images.
